From A Construction Employer

Immigrant workers who have migrated here are meeting a huge portion of our demand for workers. Since there has been virtually no legal method for them to come here and work, many of them have come illegally and then secured false documentation in order to get hired.

The jobs they are taking are not those that we can fill with American citizens. We have found that most Americans want their kids to go to college, get an education and then a white-collar job. Almost no one is encouraging his or her kids to go into craftwork such as construction - because it can be hot, hard, unreliable and unsafe.

We know first-hand that this is the case. For 10 years, our company actively supported and participated in an organization called the Construction Workforce Coalition (CWC). We went into schools, the military, job fairs, welfare to work initiatives, the Harris County Boot Camp - anywhere we saw a potential source of workers - to recruit them into our industry.

Sadly, the CWC closed its doors last October because we could not identify any measurable success in getting people into our industry. Instead, during this time that the CWC was expending so much effort to attract American citizens, it was the immigrant worker who lined up to fill out applications.

One of the perceptions out there is that immigrant workers are taking jobs from American citizens - but, that is simply not the case and we have own experience to tell us that.
