Below is a suggested letter to elected officials.
Dear {name}:
A "Lock 'em up and ship 'em out" approach will not solve our immigration dilemma. Immigrants have provided us with a badly needed labor force and it is naïve to think we could simply waive a magic wand and make all the illegal immigrants go home. Unless we are willing to use our military to perform door to door raids, immigrants are here to stay.
Raiding employers that withhold taxes, provide benefits, and do their best to follow the law only sends these employees to the arms of cash-only businesses that provide no benefits (hello hospital emergency room) and withhold no taxes (nothing to offset social services). Raids like those against the Swift Co. solve nothing.
We need comprehensive reform that works with good faith employers currently withholding taxes and providing benefits to set up a work permit program that is workable, realistic, and efficient. Only then will we come closer to identifying who is here and collecting appropriate taxes on them.
Sincerely, {your name here}
