Below is a suggested letter to elected officials.
Dear {name}:
I support all efforts to secure our borders. We cannot afford open borders in this age of terrorism and remain a strong prosperous nation.
But, we also need to reform our immigration system. As demonstrated by the ICE raid against the Swift Co., American employers are caught in a catch-22 with illegal immigration. They have been charged with policing immigration laws through the use of antiquated I-9s and threatened with lawsuits if they do anything to seriously question an employee's identification. Years before the ICE raid, Swift Co. paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to settle a lawsuit for checking I-9s too closely! Now they face federal prosecution for job creation and filling jobs with the only people willing to take them.
The construction industry finds itself in the same situation. With record-high job creation and record-low unemployment, construction companies, for better or for worse, must rely on immigrants to build America. Now, the "enforcement-first" lobby wants to blame our immigration woes on employers and force them to pay the price that all Americans owe.
Instead, we need to address the reasons why millions of immigrants are coming here--because they need jobs and we have them. We can do that with a work permit program that is realistic in the number of permits issued and efficient.
Only after we do that will we be in a position to enforce a uniform, fair, and realistic immigration policy.
Sincerely, {your name here}
